I feel bad to give a low rating to an item that is related to Darby's Bible Synopsis, one of the most important writings in human history in my personal list. But this is not a rating on Darby's work, but only to this particular digital item.
Unfortunately, at this point, there is not a good e-reader choice for this book. The only other choice is so poorly arranged with a messed-up table of contents to render it impossible to navigate on the reader.
This one is indeed more usable. The navigation is not excellent, neither is it feature-rich, but usable.
However, to me, it is unfortunate that this is divided into five books. I can't help but feeling that the only purpose this serves is to make more sales. In terms of utility, dividing into many books actually hurts the integrity of the book because it makes it far more difficult for cross-reference throughout the entire book. I would very much prefer one unified version of entire book for a nondiscounted total price to five separate books.
To me, it is not a cost issue. It is a usability issue.
At the same time, I recognize the possibility that some may prefer divided smaller books. So perhaps the publisher should offer two different options?
However, if it comes as one book, it does raise question of whether it is reasonable to charge a total price of $15 (five items combined). Of course, a total price of $15 for the entire Synopsis by Darby would not be expensive at all, as long as the publisher has done a good job in creating value. But frankly, because the content itself is not copyrighted and electronic source for the text is freely available, the only service the publisher of a version can provide is to create reasonable navigation using table of contents. I would have to say this is not a job well done here, although not a total failure like the other one.
I'm nonetheless thankful for this first usable e-reader option for the Synopsis of Bible by Darby.
AN UPDATE Rick Meyers has since published his iPad version of eSword which has an option of downloading the entire Synopsis of Darby (along with many other books and references). There is no comparison in terms of the usability. You may want to give it try if you already have or plan to have an iPad. I confess that I actually bought an iPod primarily in order to use eSword -) The program is that useful to me. (I have no relation with Rick, other than my appreciating his being a Christian brother.)
