I normally do not read plays, but I was glad I did read this one. The reason was that we were planning to go and see it on stage, and we were inviting some friends to go with us. I wanted to know a little about the plot and whether it would be an appropriate play for our friends. It was easy and interesting to read, especially the descriptions of the different characters in the play. We went and enjoyed the play. It was great to see how creative people can work with fewer props then what were described in the actual written play and still produce a great rendition of a very pleasant and entertaining play.Product details

Ah Wilderness Eugene O'Neill 9781163177211 Books Reviews
Independence Day 1906 in Connecticut. Written and first staged in 32/33. Initially named a comedy. Later O'Neill took out the comedy from the title. As well he might. While the play has its humorous aspects, it is certainly not mainly out for the laughs.
A middle class family. Main character is 17 y old Richard, a nice boy, though his silly infatuation with quoting poetry is a bit tiring. Lately he is into reading Oscar Wilde and Bernard Shaw, if not worse things. Mother is shocked. So is his girl friend's father. Under pressure, the girl friend breaks with him. In defiance he goes out with a friend of his elder brother's, a regular lout. Dick will show them. It all ends harmlessly and well. Highly unusual for EON.
While the play is not hilariously funny, one can see how the setting can be the nucleus for a sit com. Maybe this was the prototype of a genre?
The family has a reasonable but timid father, a slightly stuck up but essentially decent mother, a drinking uncle with clown talents, an old maid aunt, a teenage daughter with 'suitors', and three sons aged 19, 17, 11. You see the potential.
This is all a little too domesticated for my cynical taste, and not at all in line with O'Neill's usual worlds of living hells. I don't know what was on his mind at the time. Maybe he wanted to try if he could do something normal. He could, but it doesn't fly very high.
I just couldn't relate to it
Family drama of the best kind. What Eugene O'Neill wished his family life had been like.
Good
O'Neill is a great playwright so this work should be read along with all the other classics he has written.
Great coming of age and amusing vignettes of family life in middle America in the Thirties.
A quaint but charming tale that remains true to human behavior, even though O'Neill knew it was a romantic fantasy.
